PROJECT ADELANTE

Advancing Culturally Responsive Place-Based Educational Opportunities for Latinx Students in the Borderlands

A Five-Year Capacity-Building Grant for Borderland Students

Through its strategic plan, the University of Arizona, a land-grant and Hispanic-serving institution located in the Borderlands, is committed to community-based education. This means prioritizing its HSI designation by investing in strategies and initiatives to continue our educational mission, building more robust and empowered diverse communities in Arizona.

DoED DHSI Title V Project ADELANTE seeks to advance culturally responsive place-based educational opportunities for Latinx, First-Gen and Low-income students in providing unity across teaching, research, and service within the Borderlands region. The project will provide students with a university experience that helps develop their identities as bilingual and bicultural civic-minded professionals.

By the end of the grant period, it's estimated that more than 1,800 students will be impacted by one or more of ADELANTE's student grant activities.

We see U of A's in-state Latinx students as bearers of critical knowledge, bringing with them an understanding of key issues affecting their families and communities. Institutionally, Adelante will build on these cultural funds of knowledge and social capital and connect them to different academic contexts.
